All the knowledge you need to understand Amazon UPC code
In 2016, Amazon introduced the UPC policy to regulate such product identifiers.
Amazon said: "We will view the authenticity of the product UPC code through the GS1 (United States Uniform Code Council) database, and UPC codes that do not meet the information provided by GS1 will be considered invalid. To ensure that your information is consistent with the GS1 database, we recommend You get the UPC code directly from GS1 and do not buy from other third-party UPC code sales channels. "
Why did Amazon do that?
First, Amazon made the change because of the tens of thousands of duplicate listings on its platform. Some sellers bought qualified UPC codes from GS1, but used them for products that already had manufacturer UPC codes. Duplicate listing will cause inconvenience to the buyer to make the buyer confused.
Amazon's new strategy, allowing them to crack down on fake UPC code sellers, reduces the possibility of duplicate listing.
Amazon is gradually implementing the UPC policy, at present, Amazon mainly checks the seller product manufacturer information, brand information, etc. are consistent with GS1 information:
(1) The platform will automatically detect the validity of the UPC code when the seller uploads the category that Amazon requires to provide a valid UPC code;
(2) check the UPC code of the existing listing;
(3) Amazon also manually checks some of the issue sellers, such as sellers with wrong use of ASIN variations.
Advertise non-your-brand braned products
If you publish a branded product other than your own brand, you should use the UPC code provided by the manufacturer of the product.
Amazon policy prohibits sellers from using their UPC code on other products, which may result in your listing and seller accounts being closed.
If you sell a product that does not have a UPC code, you need to contact your supplier. Manufacturers and brand owners are the most reliable source of UPC code.
If the product does not have a GTIN code, you can apply to Amazon for exemption from filling UPC code. At the time of application, you will need a confirmation letter from the owner of the brand indicating that the product does not actually have a GTIN code, as well as a product website link or product image.
Publication of your own-brand products
You will need to purchase the UPC code yourself from GS1, which will give you a corporate prefix that indicates you are the brand owner. Be careful not to buy from anywhere else, once you do, your product may be identified as a different brand.
If you sell the product to a large retailer, they only accept the UPC code provided by GS1.
Is it possible for sellers to publish their own branded products without UPC code?
There are some special categories that you can do so. Likewise, you can apply to Amazon and they will assign a generic category catalog identifier (GCID) to your product that will replace the UPC code.
Published bundled sales of products
If you want to bundle your own brand products, you need to use a special GS1 UPC code, be careful not to use any of the products UPC code.
For bundled products from the same brand, if you are not the brand owner, you should ask the brand owner for a UPC code. Note that if the bundled products come from the same brand, and you can apply to Amazon for a UPC code exemption with a confirmation letter from the owner of the brand.
How to deal with the listing with wrong UPC code?
For regular distributors, you need to close the listing and republish the listing with the correct UPC code.
For independent brand sellers, it is best to turn off the listing. All product listings with invalid UPC codes will be deleted by Amazon and may cause the ASIN you created, sales privileges to be removed temporarily or permanently.
Of course, if you have already done the Amazon brand record, you do not need UPC code when the product is published.
Note: At the seller's central, the GTIN field is editable and the sellers may edit the GTIN field on the original listing. But we still advise sellers to create a new, correct listing and request a merge with the old directory.
